153/365 – Catalonia – D.O. Penedes – Cabrera d’Anoia – Can Feixes – Can Feixes Negre Jove Seleccio 2010
On the slopes of the mountains that separate the comarcas of Penedès and Anoia, in the extreme north-west of the Alt Penedès (Upper Penedès) on the highlands of Cabrera and Mediona, the Can Feixes estate goes quietly about its business of respect for tradition and terroir, making affordable yet tasty wines.
Can Feixes is a family business, looking for a long term development and doing so, slowly and step by step. Limited production enables them to respect their convictions about the responsible use of their land and its wider environment. The intense care required to produce wines of the highest quality and character may limit the scope for growth, but it accords perfectly with their beliefs about this landscape of which they act, briefly, as stewards for generations to come.
Here, at an altitude of 400mts, the vines are subject to more extreme thermal conditions, which result in slower ripening of the fruit. This yields grapes of greater concentration with a more harmonious, velvety constitution. The soil is chalk clay and quite rocky, but with certain capacity to retain water.
Together, climate and soil might be seen as adverse limiting factors. In fact, they are anything but. The combination results in a lower yield, but of grapes with a singular character and exceptional quality. It also lends itself perfectly to the cultivation of the ideal varieties of Parellada, Macabeo, Malvasia de Sitges, Chardonnay, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Petit Verdot. From these, and exclusively from their own vineyards, they produce a range of finely crafted wines and Cavas.
One of my personal day to day wine comes from this estate and I recommend it highly. Comparing price/quality it is hard to come by anything this tasty for less coin.
Can Feixes Negre Jove Seleccio 2010, 70% Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo) and 30% Merlot
Clean, bright red cherry color with maroon and burgundy edges, medium-high and dense tears. The nose has good intensity, clean and interesting. The selected varieties capture balsamic notes, menthol, minerals, cocoa, black coffee and licorice. All together it feels like a”expensive” wine. All the aromas are intertwined and linked to black and ripe fruit. It also shows the perception of a soft and delicate evolution. The nose has lots of character and personality. It has a very good entry, tasty, dry, warm structure, character, toasted, quietly bitter with tannins, good acidity and medium persistence. In conclusion, an interesting young wine with character and distinction in both the nose and palate.
