167/365 – Catalonia – D.O. Penedes – Vilobi del Penedes – descRegut– BenVIngut 2013
….., oh benVInguts, (welcome in Catalan), was uttered some 20 years ago when the Merlot was introduced at the estate of descRegut! The merlot doesn’t only thrive and prosper in Bordeaux and I have discovered some Catalan merlots that have proved to be really good! I’ll keep searching to find more but in the meanwhile, see if you can find this one to bring some happiness to your wine loving days to come! BenVInguts Merlot!!!
BenVIngut 2013, 100% Merlot
Fermented during three weeks, after which the malolactic fermentation is done in stainless steel tanks. Light aging in French oak barrels for six months. The aroma is very clean, weel put together and a very nice entry. The foundation is that of red fruits (cherry) and mature black fruit like raspberry jam. Hints of the barrel aging (toasted notes and chocolate), and a very nice vegetal background (mowed grass and Mediterranean forest herbs), which provides a soothing freshness. In the mouth it is a wine with volume, average body, oily texture and velvety touch. Its passage is elegant, fruity, along with a tannic feeling and soft acidity which gives off a cooling effect. For now, this is their only red and I have only tried their younger white, which was also quite nice. I am looking forward to trying their higher level whites!
212 to go!
