Expressio 2008, 100% Garnacha
Dark purple red with ruby edges, clear with heavy tears. On the nose it transmits the Garnacha to its maximum, giving off those mineral notes, black fruit, coffee, earth, violets, white stone fruit and peach and the list goes on and on. Fleshy on the palate, black fruit, peach, tasty, elegant, fine tannins, chamomile flowers, long, round and very well balanced with a long after taste. A Super Catalan by a Super Catalana!
For many wine friends in the region, the cellar of Can sais is equal to Marta Arenas, the wine maker and, some say, the soul and heart of the winery. Off course, the success of a wine or a cellar cannot all together be attributed to one person alone, but in this case, it goes a long way. If you have been following my blog, you would have noticed my latest preferred expression “Super Catalans”, referring off course to the great wines of this amazing region, but it could also refer to the great wine makers here, in many cases ladies making Super Catalans! Marta is surely one of these great people!
Can Sais Winery is a small family winery with a long winemaking tradition. Its history goes back to the late seventeenth century when the ancestors made wine for the local community. Today it is the oldest and the only winery in the valley, Vall-Llobrega. Located on top of the village, in the premises of the old house Can Sais, the work all revolves around modest conditions but with elaborate installations.
During the latest decade, the new generation of winemakers has set a trajectory directed towards the production of quality wines. Their main goal being the cultivation and processing in the most respectful way with regards to the environment and each process; with the final goal of obtaining a product as natural as possible. They are looking to yield low production per plant whilst maintaining the highest sensitivity during the vinification. Concentration of fruit, allowing the wines to express the “terroir”, yet again giving them a unique style and personality. Can Sais winery falls under the D.O. of Emporda! The 12 hectares of vineyards are located in the valleys of the Massif Gavarres in the municipality of Vall-Llobrega with a specific microclimate and ideal for these types of vines at only 5 km from the sea.
Around 30% are old vines and the rest are new plantings, all without fertilizer or irrigation. The land consists mainly of shale and clay, where traditional varieties, indigenous to the area have been planted and looked after. The prevailing varieties are; Malvasia, White Grenache, Macabeo, Xarel-lo, Grenache, Tempranillo, Samso and Merlot as the welcomed immigrant!
