Another Love…..,

cabirolFinca del Cabriol 2013, 70% Tempranillo and 30% Merlot

Intense cherry and vivid purple colour with very violet rim, middle layer, dense and persistent tear. Delicate aromas of fruit, blackberries and blueberries without becoming overwhelming, complexly mixed with subtle spicy touches. Warm and soft mouth, with little tannins. Good balance between acidity and alcohol. Medium persistent.

In the town of Montmagastre, within the municipality of Artesa de Segre, lays the 100-hectare estate of Mas Ramoneda, with twenty hectares of vineyards. In this area, belonging to the D.O. Costers de Segre, fog and extreme temperatures are common and typical of a continental climate which  predominates the region. These elements give the fruit its character: the red varieties are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Tempranillo, Garnacha and Monastrell.

Mas Ramoneda was created in 2009, when the Ros family began producing wines with the help of an oenologist using only the grapes grown in their own vineyards. Until then, the fruit of the stocks planted at the end of the 1980’s had been sold to the cooperative. Like many, they also are realizing the benefits of producing their own wine and looking away from the old ways of selling to bulk producing mega wineries.

In the cellar, located in the farmhouse, they use traditional vinification methods. After picking the grapes and selecting the best fruit by hand, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. As for crianza (aged) wines, they are allowed to age in oak barrels from the renowned region of Allier. Their red and rosé wines can be tasted during the free tour of the cellar and the vineyards (by appointment), accompanied by winery staff able to explain its working methods in several foreign languages (German, English, French and Italian). They also boast a small museum fitted out in an old underground cellar. A nice day trip from Barcelona, to the Costers del Segre takes just about an hour thirty to get there, leaving the city stress behind.
