206/365 – Catalonia – DOQ Priorat – Porrera – Celler de l’Encastell – Roquers de Porrera 2007
Roquers de Porrera 2007, 40% Carignena, 40% Garnacha, 20% Merlot and 20% Syrah
Cherry colour with a garnet rim. The nose is full of ripe fruit (blackberries). Nice soft spices. Some creaminess, toasted oak. Very complex with earthy notes. The entry is powerful, loads of flavours. Round tannins, balsamic. Velvety and rich!
The production of the Roquers de Porrera is between 4.000 – 6.000 bottles per vintage. The ageing takes place during 16 months in fine grained Allier barrels and all the grapes come from the vineyards of the winery.
Celler de l’Encastell is a small family-run vineyard and winery in the picturesque village of Porrera, DOQ Priorat, where Carme and Raimon produce the two reds, Roquers de Porrera and Marge. In wine terms they started only recently, in 1999 they decided to bottle their passion for wine. Using only grapes from the two vineyards of Mas d’en Cacador and Mas d’en Ferran. Previously, like many others, the family sold their grapes to the co-operatives and other wineries.
The estate of Mas d’en Cacador covers some 2,5 hectares of steep “Licorella”, schist hillside. Old vines of 60 to 90 years of age with equal proportion of Carignena and Garnacha. The Roquers de Porrera contains both and then the Merlot and Syrah are added. The vineyard is north facing and lies at an altitude of 500 meters. Altogether there are some 12,000 – 15,000 vines, which in the best vintages provide around 6,000 kg of sun drenched grapes, this equals around 300 to 500 grams per vine.
Mas d’en Ferran covers 5 hectares of 2 to 3 meter wide Licorella slate terraces, plated with Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha, Merlot and Syrah. This vineyard contributes with fruit to both the Roquers de Porrera, to make it a bit rounder, and to the younger Marge. Here the out take is around 1,5 to 2 kg per vine.
