216/365 – Catalonia – D.O. Penedes – El Papiol – Celler Finca Parera – Sasso Parera 2010
Organic wine produced in a completely traditional way. The raisins are harvested manually after a careful selection. The grapes are tread by foot as in the old days. A partial malolactic fermentation takes place in the acacia barrels in which the wine will stay for 7 months on its lees. The wine is carefully manipulated during its clarification, its filtration and the bottling, not to break the balance achieved during the ageing. This white Super Catalan is released in very limited numbers and if you do find it, buy it by the case! Indeed a very tasty wine! Clean and bright intense golden colour with abundant thin tears. Intense and very pleasant aromas. The intensity that emerges from the primary nose is amazing. The elegant toasted and spicy notes provided during the ageing take centre stage. Gradually, the aromas of both green and ripe fruit and some fruit in syrup appear dominated by the notes of stone fruit. Its vanilla background completes the set with a great harmony and expressiveness. Fresh and dry, full-bodied and very tasty wine. It coats the palate with a great unctuousity and perfectly balanced notes of fruit and wood. Its bulky and its excellent acidity provides it with a good freshness. Long finish with a soft bitterness and hints of nuts. An elegant, surprising and enjoyable wine. For me, one more Super Catalan to be added to the scrolls!
Finca Parera is a small family run bodega that started planting vines about 20 years ago alongside their certified organic cherry orchards – the first to become so in Penedes. The work here is truly biodynamic and production is less than 1,500 cases annually. Ruben, winemaker and proprietor never uses new barrels. The vineyards are comprised of mostly clay soils at 350 meters above sea level. The wines are a refined natural expression of their terroir and natural and traditional winemaking techniques.
