Gramona Mas Escorpi Cosecha 2013, 100% Chardonnay
Clear white wine, straw yellow with greyish and pale gold reflections. Nose of high intensity expressed in a wide range of aromas, fresh fruit, pear water, fruit peel, hints of ripe fruit such as mango, some refreshing citrus zest, some slight nuances of white flowers. The palate entry is fresh with unique fruit, good acidity, smoothness and body that completes this wine, plus an intense and long fruity aftertaste. Can we expect this 2014 as well?
Starting next week, the vintage wines of the D.O. Penedès starts, and does so with the Chardonnay variety. As always, harvest time, is for me the most exciting, as there’s so much movement in the vineyards, the villages and the cellars. The moderate weather and low amount of rainfall between spring and summer has accelerated the maturation of the grapes and due to this reason, the harvest will commence much earlier, in comparison to last years harvest. Another noteworthy observation, due to the same weather conditions, there has been a good control of disease.
This years harvest is expected to be in the lower numbers, when it comes to quantity, but the vintners are expecting very good quality in the D.O. Penedes. The other varieties such as Pinot Noir, Xarel.lo, Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Parellada, etc … are going to be harvested from August 14th, starting with Pinot Noir and continuing with the rest. Last years harvest started mid September and finished well into October. I reckon that the grapes are going to be packed with flavours this year! Now all that remains is to wait and see the final results.
