Catalan wine in a nutshell!

L’italiano………,

bodegamascomtal

….., let me sing, with the guitar in hand, let me sing, I’m an Italian, a true Italian….., no, not me but the grape variety we are about to cover. Incrocio Manzoni, not Catalan but happy in Catalonia, so this time we’ll be exploring this little hybrid, which I now have had the fortune to try twice, from two different wineries in the Penedes region. To put an additional twist to the story, the tasting was conducted in Stockholm only yesterday. As usual, the wine comes first, the circumstances to follow.

Antistiana 2012, 100% Incrocio Manzoni

Bright straw yellow colour. The nose transmits fresh aromas of citrus, herbs like rosemary and a likeable saltiness. This is a very Mediterranean style wine but with something that doesn’t really “fit the bill” to be fully considered a typical middle sea wine…

Catalan wine in a nutshell!

The Lazy Song……..,

11918-front_8

Mas Vilella 2009, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Nice cherry dark cherry with garnet edges and violet reflections. Clean and bright. Good intensity with a significant fruit load, lots of ripe red fruit, spice, hints of undergrowth, leather, licorice and mineral background. The palate is powerful with a good structure and excellent acidity. Firm and long finish, persistent tannins. The retronasal reminds me of compotes and red fruits appear as well as toasted notes.

THE DAY!

Apparently it is with some difficulty one tries to decide to visit the wineries in the vicinity. So many great producers just around the corner from where we live and yet, most of the time we go to Priorat, Montsant, Terra Alta and so on. Living in Penedes means there are choices and choices when it comes to wine and Cava producers. As…

Bouquet d’Alella, Sabor a Mi in D.O Alella

Catalan wine in a nutshell!

Sabor a Mi…….,

Bouquetdalella_Blanc_2013

Bouquet d’A Blanc 2013, 65% Pansa Blanca, 35% Garnacha Blanca

Bright straw yellow with green hue. Fresh aromas of flowers, white fruits with a soft citrus fragrance. Soft in the mouth upon entry, followed by fruity flavors and fresh, nicely-balanced acidity. Smooth and silky. Long finish with long lasting “terroir” flavours. The wine shows Mediterranean character in its purest form. A fresh Middle Sea white, to be enjoyed with friends. Prepare a nice pasta dish and a few bottles will flow easily.

enoturisme

Bouquet d’Alella, an adventure which the Cerdà brother and sister bravely set out on in 2010, was born out of the motto, “Live Tradition, Experience Innovation”. They were inspired by a tradition handed down by their father – Antonio Cerda – embodied by the masia (the farm house) and vineyards, and by…

Rosell Mir, A Change is Gonna Come in D.O. Penedes

Catalan wine in a nutshell!

183/365 – Catalonia – D.O. Penedes – Subirats – Rosell Mir – Marc Mir 2008

A Change is Gonna Come…….

Marc Mir 2008

Marc Mir 2008, 70% Xarel.lo and 30% Chardonnay

This is not a Super Catalan and if you are an all together fan of Chardonnay, don’t expect much from this blend, as the Xarel.lo is dominating all together and the one thing I fail to understand with this, very well made and likeable wine, is, why did they use Chardonnay at all? If you have a predisposition in trying new, fresh and easy to drink wines, this is certainly for you. Plenty of white fruit, pear and apple and also some sweet notes of peach. This is a dry wine but there are some tendencies of it reminding you of a sweet fruity summer beverage. I liked it a lot!

Very fine and abundant bubbles. Good aromatic impression of nuts with tropical notes of banana and pineapple, citrus and lavender. It has good acidity and good integration of carbon, highlights the flavors of ripe fruit and quince. Large and persistent after taste. This is a great quality/price Cava, that would go well with a nice summer fish bbq! Happy Cava loving days!

Soothing purple cherry colour with a violet rim and thin tears that staines the glass quite well. The nose has a nice intensity of ripe berries and fresh forest, sweet candied berries. Mild refreshing licorice notes, toasted barrel and some balsamic notes that give a lot of freshness on the nose (menthol and hintsof red licorice). It has a growing nose and a bunch of aromas, at times making it hard to decide which way it is going. Pleasant on the palate with fine astringency, good and tasty ripe red fruit running through all the way, good acidity, hints of licorice and candied red berries. Smooth texture, quite sweet, easy to drink and pleasant persistence…

Tinto_C.Segre_BRU_DE_VERDU_2010_CERCAVINS (1)

Bru Verdu 2010 is a blend of Ull de Llebre, Syrah and Merlot . After de-stemming and crushing, maceration and fermentation is done in stainless steel tanks. After a gentle pressing it rests on American and Hungarian oak, ageing for 6 months. Dark cherry color with garnet rim. Clean and bright. Slow and slightly tinted tears. It has a clean and intense nose with outstanding very fruity aromas, ripe black fruit and licorice intermixed with subtle spices and lightly toasted. Mild vegetables and balsamic background appears after a while. The entry is powerful, fleshy and dry, marked by intense roasted notes, light spices and a delicate mineral touch. Good acidity that refreshes and distinctly tannic. Persistent finish that leaves roasted and fruity sensations.
