Celler Mas Llunes, Samba para Vinicius in D.O. Emporda

292/365 – Catalonia – D.O. Emporda – Garriguella – Celler Mas Llunes – Emporion 2006

Samba para Vinicius……..,

empor06_det_1

Emporion 2006, 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Syrah

Garnet colour, lovely depth, quite dense and dark. Intense aroma of balsamic and spices, mature fruits of the forest, red mature fruits, the oak is very well-integrated. Some raspberry. On the palate it is tasty, powerful, round and full bodied, well constructed, elegant and balanced. First taste reminded me of milk chocolate. The tannins are ripe and the after taste is long and fruity. A red favorite from the Emporda!

il_570xN.415182599_qb7tEmporion is the name of the oldest Greek colony, founded by the Phoenicians, now called Ampuries, where we can find the oldest viticulture references regarding the wines on the Iberian Peninsula, dating back to VI century BC and this is where the name Emporda derives from, which indentifies the region and the ‘Denominacion de Origen’, the appellation of Emporda. The winged horse, Pegasus, identified Emporion with the coin (dracmas) which were minted in the colony during the Greek period and subsequently by the Romans.

On the edge of the  mountain range of the Albera, in undulating hills, rows of vines grow through pine, oak forests and some olive trees, forming a tapestry of changing colors every season, framing the blue Mediterranean sea and the white mountains of Canigó.  This is where the wines of Mas Llunes are born, wines with a noticeable Ampurdanés charactermodern and respectful with a family winemaking tradition of over 700 yearsmoving this generous and captivating nature to the bottle and the glass.

masllunesThe name derives from the name of the vineyards and as the property was acquired, the new owners didn’t want to change the name. The winery itself was built during the turn of the millennium, equipped with a modern winemaking system. The 48 hectares of vineyard produce around 200.000 Kg of grapes, which is all vinified in the cellar.

mas-llunes-06

The constructed surface is 1.260 square meters and the capacity of the vessels is 3.600 hl. The ageing cellar, with more than 200 French oak barrels, is located underground, this way the wine in kept and stabilized a good temperature all year.

mas-llunes-01

The landscape is harsh and irregular, caressed by a strong north wind called Tramuntana. The Mediterranean climate clearly presents conditions suited for growing vine. Past generations have created the legacy for the wine making culture here, making this area a sight for those who decide to visit.

rhodes-2006Rhodes 2008, 72% Samsó and 28% Syrah

Rhodes, the current town of Roses was founded in the VIII century BC by the ‘Rodios,’ and it is the most ancient Greek colony in Catalonia. It ia also highly probably that the range Serres Prelitorals of Rodes and the Albera form the most ancient vine-growing landscape of the Iberian Peninsula. The rose that decorates the label, is the symbol of Rhodes on the ancient coins (drachmas) of the colony.

Purple colour. Powerful aroma of ripe red fruit, licorice, cocoa and species. On the palate it is fresh, balanced, tasty with character and personality. A good accompaniment for both red and white meats, game, sausages, cured cheeses, vegetable stews and rice dishes.

International Garnacha Day! The Drunkard Song in D.O. Montsant

277/365 – Catalonia – D.O. Montsant – Marçà – Acustic Celler – Auditori 2010

The Drunkard Song………,

auditori-2010-etAuditori 2010, 100% Garnacha

Pure pleasure, and as the top wine of Acustic Celler it displays and conveys the elaboration and terrior to perfection. Grapes from three old Garnacha vineyards, all 70 years and older. A full-bodied sensual sensation, with well ripened red fruits, cherry is clear. I distinguished some licorice  and a little spiciness  with clear oak as it progressed. Medium long finish. Nicely integrated tannins. Could easily stay in my cellar for another 5 – 10 years. The downside…….., not enough bottles on the market!

GrenacheDay2014website

The third Friday of September is celebrated as the International Day of Grenache. Coinciding with this important day for all wine lovers, events are organized today and during the weekend to come. This is the fourth year of this initiative, a series of activities for everyone that enjoy a glass or two of Garnacha, Grenache or Garnatxa, as it is referred to in Catalonia. I’ve chosen to open a bottle of Auditori from Acustic Celler! What could possibly go wrong with that choice?

grenache-grapes

Grenache is a variety of Mediterranean origin and one of the most cultivated worldwide. In Catalonia, it is estimated that there are about 5,000 hectares planted. Many wines are made with the help of this great grape variety, either as a mono-varietal or blend. It transmits the identity of a region and the expression of a landscape in a perfect way, picking up the different soils and microclimates of the regions in which we can find it: Montsant , Priorat Emporda, Terra Alta Alella, etc. Over centuries, the Grenache vine has produced colour mutation vines with berries of all range of colors, and also the hairy Grenache, in Catalonia called Garnacha Peluda The latter is a clone, originating from the Tarragona region. Grenache can be made with a variety of fruity wines and good acidity from youth to sparkling whites, and also sweets. Grenache Noir is generally spicy, berry-flavored and soft on the palate with a relatively high alcohol content, but it needs careful control of yields for best results. Characteristic flavor profiles on Grenache include red fruit flavors (raspberry and strawberry) with a subtle, white pepper spice note. Grenache wines are highly prone to oxidation with even young examples having the potential to show browning (or “bricking”) coloration that can be noticed around the rim when evaluating the wine at an angle in the glass. As Grenache ages the wines tend to take on more leather and tar flavors.

GarnatxesMontsantPriorat
As for sharing favourites……, well I guess that’s what I do all days! But just for the heck of it, some of the Garnacha wines I wouldn’t mind having on a a more regular basis could, but not be limited to, be the following; Espectacle 2010,Teixar 2010, Trossos 2011, Cerverola 2011, LLuna Vella 2010, Cims de Porrera GX 2006, Raret 2011 and Mas Plantadeta 2008.

There’s a lot going on in Catalonia to celebrate the Grenache, as well as the Mostra de Vins i Caves de Catalunya, which starts tomorrow in Barcelona, a fair covering Catalan wines and Cava, and does so during four days, 20th to 24th of September. A few players that have dedicated activities to the International Grenache Day are;

Vinyes Domenech

Vineyes Domenech, one of the wineries in Catalonia that promote Grenache. They organizes collaborations with chefs and sommeliers in different restaurants and speciality shops during the Day. Among them, the restaurant Dos Cielos, la Cuina del Guinardó, el Hoffman, Divi i el Colmado Quilez de Barcelona, the restaurant at the Club del Cep d’Arenys de Mar, the Cellar Montserrat de Mataró and the Cellar Florida de Barcelona, Cal Feru de Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, Bodega Jordà de Tarragona, Can Bosch de Cambrils, etc. If you feel for a drive through the countryside, you are certainly welcome to visit Vineyes Domenech, to see for yourself how the Grenache is treated in situ.

Vila Viniteca
Vila Viniteca, a well renowned wine shop in Barcelona, celebrate Friday evening with a tasting of 25 wines made from the variety, including the Tros Negre 2011 (Montsant), Cabrida 2010 (Montsant), Brunus Rosat 2013 (Monsant), L’Equilibrista Garnatxa 2012 (Catalunya), Quike Rosado 2013 (Catalunya), Gamberro Garnatxa Blanca 2011 (Terra Alta), Gotes Blanques 2013 (Montsant), Masia Serra Ino (Empordà), Pansal del Calàs 2010 (Montsant), etc. This tasting is free of charge. Living and working here has its perks, as I have pointed out many times before.

Edetaria

In addition to the above activities, The Celler Edetària, has posted a contest on their official Facebook page, called the “Grenache Challenge 2014“, where you have a chance to win one of their wines. Enjoy Wine Barcelona are tasting Grenache wines from DO Empordà at The Santa Caterina Market in the Born area of Barcelona, and this is where they normally have their wine tasting activities, Grenache day or not. Now all that remains is to enjoy the day and appreciate the Grenache variety to its fullest! Enjoy!

Winery Terra Remota, Lulu’s Back In Town, D.O. Empordà

265/365 – Catalonia – D.O. Empordà – Sant Climent De Sescebes – Terra Remota – Terra Remota Tan Natural 2013

Lulu’s Back In Town……..,

Tan-Natural-2013-Terra-Remota

Terra Remota Tan Natural 2013, 100% Garnacha Tinta

A «natural style» wine. Seductive ruby robe with hints of violet. The nose is that of fresh grapes, crisp and healthy, a mount of crushed red fruits. A frank palate, fine and light but also firm, with very fine tannins. A pleasant wine whose charming frankness invites you to try it. Terra Remota launched this wine in 2013, using inspired elaboration, to respond to nearby traditional working models of the area and to convey the freshness and naturalness of the popular wines of the area. That was the beginning of Tan Natural, which the company claims is “the most casual and frank Terra Remota wine, moreover, thanks to a very competitive price, it becomes a perfect entry level wine” to discover this unique winery of the D.O. Empordà.

In the vintage 2013, Terra Remota Tan Natural presents this wine using the varietal Grenache as a fresh and aromatic variety treated entirely within the parameters of organic farming in this winery. The philosophy of Terra Remota work is based on a maximum respect for nature and is certified organic since 2012. After being harvested in boxes of 10 kg, the grapes for the Tan Natural entered the winery and spent three weeks macerating during which pigeage was performed manually once a day for maximum extraction. “No tricks, simplicity and transparency” Terra Remota Tan Natural 2013 presents the consumer with an alluring wine, certainly not for everyday consumption.

In the “remote land” you will find the “narrow lane“. The “hiker” travels the “road” less used. You will at the end of your journey, if you’ve found your way, enjoy what lies within the “quotation marks“.

A 2009 vintage of the rose Caminito sees the light and smells the air after its 5 years trapped in a bottle. Wine is happiest in my mouth and belly, and that’s a fact! Anyone who disputes that will be shot, slowly. I might have in excess of 100 different wines in my cellar, trapped only because I am lazy and lack time to uncork and enjoy! But trust me, I am working real hard to change that.

This Product Is Not Tested On Animals

Before we get the ball rolling I just want to put out a disclaimer! No animals where harmed during this tasting, it was only the cork that took a hit. In the cellar of Marc and Emma Bournazeau, located in the countryside of Emporda, enjoying wine is a fact of life too. Production here never sacrifices quality, but on the contrary, is subject to it.

terraremota

Therefore, since the launch of their first vintage of the 2006 Camino, it has managed to penetrated into national and international markets. At present, the foreign markets includes countries such as France, Switzerland, Brazil, Denmark, Netherlands, Italy, Belgium and the USA. The winery exports 70 % of its production, small quantities produced, so it is not altogether easy to find the wines on the local market.

Terra_Remota_startpagina

In a vintage characterized by quantity and quality, the 2011 Camino offers the complexity and roundness of a great coupage: Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Ull de Llebre, in order of appearance, provide the best of each variety to achieve a balanced and rich wine.

Terra_remota01

As for the rest of the range of Terra Remota, all the grapes come from the estate of 23 hectares grown in the D.O. Empordà, in a granitic area that in 2012 was certified for organic farming. Standing out for its aromatic finesse, Camino 2011 offers jammy nose of cherries, vanilla, sotobosque (underbrush) and herbs. The palate is filled with velvety tannins and display meaty notes with hints of licorice and red fruit jam.

IMG_1306-500x500

In a granitic soil of the Empordà, at the foot of the Sierra de la Albera, Marc and Emma Bournazeau founded Terra Remota in 1996. The winery, designed by Pepe Cortes Nacho Ferrer, is hosted in 23 ha. vineyard. His philosophy is based with a maximum respect for nature and the building is well integrated in the surroundings. Marc Bournazeau can be symbolized by his line “Road”, product quality through perseverance at work.

Cellar Oliver Conti, Cool Struttin’ in D.O. Emporda

250/365 – Catalonia – D.O. Emporda – Capmany – Oliver Conti – Treyu 2012

Cool Struttin’……..,

Treyu 2012

Treyu 2012, 52% Gewürztraminer, 38% Macabeo and 10% Sauvignon Blanc

Pale yellow colour with green hues. Treyu is a fresh wine with white and tropical fruit aromas. Pear, pineapple and very mature bananas and a subtle hint of roses. Nicely structured with the help of its acidity, displaying lemon and grapefruit. This wine is a mouthful, it is honeyed, well balanced, long and agreeable. It also has a good structure and persistence. It is a young wine that with time will evolve and to some degree change its character. This will be a highly complex wine if it is allowed to spend some time in the bottle!

oliver_conti

The Oliver Conti dream started In 1991, a dream with a glow. A dream made of the Tramontana wind and hope. They choose the Empordà region because the soils and climate could give them the fruits they desired. On the slopes of the Alberes mountain range, granitic soils poor in organic life, 15 hectares of vines were plante with the varietals that would allow them to produce high quality, fruity and elegant wines. As time went by, the dream has become a reality and the Emporda region has developed as a coveted appelation, desired for the undeniable quality of its wines.

cellers_4_es

André Crespy, Professor and Doctor in Agronomy at Montpellier University, helped the Olive Conti project during the first years with his obsession to obtain the highest quality grapes. Nowadays Pepe Hidalgo, Agronomist Engineer and Ana Martin, Oenologist, are pushing them to reach the highest level of quality in the wine making process. The  vineyards has always gone together with two obsessions: aroma and elegance. Discovering that aromas can give so much satisfaction, made them work harder to keep them all along the process of harvesting, fermentation and aging. As a result, when opening a bottle of Oliver Conti, the agreeable and fulfilling sensations help to enjoy such extraordinary wines.

Jordi Oliver Conto and his new project JOC. Launching wines in the higher quality/price range!

The second obsession is elegance, creating long lasting wines with a round and velvety mouth that leave extraordinary agreeable sensations and an endurable aftertaste.  Wines that don’t satiate and that the second glass is better than the first and you enjoy the third better than the second. Wines to go along with food and not just for tasting. The Upper Ampurdan offers ideal conditions for obtaining vines of high quality, thanks to its Mediterranean climate and the protection of the Alberes mountains. Until the arrival of the Oliver Conti vintners, this was a relatively unknown zone for vine growing, as the region was more oriented toward massive plantations destined for undistinguished table wines. At Oliver Conti, research has been continuous and of inestimable help in achieving their objectives.

Vinya del Metge 2013, 90% Garnacha Roja and 10% Garnacha Negra

A rosé wine with an elegant sparkling colour and lingering mouth. A different rosé from the Empordà. It has an attractive pale pink, slightly salmon, colour. On the nose it is fresh and lively, with primary aromas of the varieties, the Grenache is showing of in a very filling way. The mouth is balanced and very enjoyable. A rosé wine that I wouldn’t mind having a few bottles of on stock, as it might come in handy for the late summer evenings, as a pre dinner glass of wine. Manual harvest in boxes of 20 kg. The grey Grenache comes from La Vinya del Metge in Mollet de Peralada, the red Grenache from La Guilla in Garriguella. Maceration for 48 h for the grey Grenache and 12-24 h  for the red Grenache. Great price/quality comparison!

Finca Bell-Lloc, Root-Down in D.O. Emporda

223/365 – Catalonia – D.O. Emporda – Palamos – Finca Bell-Lloc – As for the wine? Why not come and try it at the “Beautiful Place”?

Root-Down……..,

BEllLloc1

Sometimes……., it’s only the wine, other times it is only the property/winery, or the persons behind the projects or the location or, or, or……., many a times it is all of the above, including history, the present and the future. In the case of Bell-Lloc it is so much more. So perfect, so well thought through and utterly and distinctly checking all the boxes, hands down a true favorite, or Root-Down, I’ll have to stay here for a weekend to enjoy the Bell-Lloc, (*Bell Lloc is Catalan and translated it is and means, Beautiful Place). I suggest you come and enjoy this piece of beauty in Catalonia and at that time, try the wines where they deserve to be enjoyed!

BellLLoc 4

The Finca Bell-Lloc winery is almost buried on the boundary between the vineyards and woodland. The winery building, designed by the RCR architecture studio of Olot, is surprising in its audacity and its perfect symbiosis with nature. On the surface, the parallel steel panels sloping in different directions are an original way of conferring a structured yet dynamic order on the complex as a whole. Meanwhile, the underground area is made up of a labyrinth of dark, insulated and cool passageways equipped with climate control. To enter this area is to penetrate into a world of shadows. Down here the silence can be heard, the aroma of the wine can be perceived, the strength of the materials can be felt and, when it comes to tasting the wines, all five senses are finally stimulated.

Finca Bell-Lloc. Celler Brugarol DO Empordà

Introducing the farm in the lovely setting of The Gavarras (Girona) offers exclusive accommodation that redefines the traditional concept of luxury. Finca Bell Lloc is a place where you could easily get lost for a weekend (or longer), Here you can celebrate a memorable event together with friends or family or enjoy authentic pleasures, like Catalan food and organic wine, or why not both in a combination? Located in Las Gavarras, near Palamos (Girona), yet off the beaten path in the middle of a magical environment consisting of olive trees, pines, vines and views of the sea. This old house, typical for the region, also has spectacular vineyards you can visit and participate in guided tastings.

BellLloc2

Everything in the Bell-lloc Villa is steeped in a philosophy that avoids unnecessary processing, and take advantage of advances to deliver the highest quality, without subtracting essence and authenticity. The farm is part of the Rough Luxe concept that proposes a new way of conceiving luxury as a moment in time and not as a high price commodity. The house of Bell-Lloc, which hosts the “hotel” has 6 rooms each of which has been decorated with a distinct style that gives them personality. Each room carries the name of some of the grapes that the winery uses for their production. Samso (Carignen), Garnatxa (Grenache), Lledoner, Malvasia, Xarello and Moscatell. This part of the property offering accommodation is completed with an attached three bedroom house surrounded by vineyards, ideal for family holidays, and an exceptional pool.

BellLloc8

The wine bottles of the  Bell-Lloc winery are unlabelled. Or at least not labelled as per “normal” standards. All you need to know about the wine, is very concentrated information which you will find on the very original metal housing that gives the bottle a very minimalistic style, consistent with the wine and the winery. Josep Trallero, the winemaker at Bell-Lloc, says that “the capsule is of the same materials with which they built the winery and responds to our understanding of wine.” A wine and a philosophy that has “minimum presence of additives and the extreme care of the vineyard,” adds Trallero.

BellLloc 6

Everything at Finca Bell-lloc is pervaded by the philosophy of avoiding unnecessary processing and taking advantage of progress for providing comfort and quality, but without losing any of its essence and authenticity. The wish of the proprietors is that every instant spent on the estate, is to be evocative and lasting in your memory. How is this achieved? By stimulating your five senses, without any tricks. Rough Luxe is having time for reflection; enjoying the pleasure of close encounters with people, nature, architecture and the environment; living cultural, social and gastronomic experiences associated with concrete geographic localities. And giving time and all that surrounds us the high importance it deserves.

Masia Serra, Bringing Down The Byrds in D.O. Empordà

221/365 – Catalonia – D.O. Empordà – Masia Serra – Ctonia 2012

Bringing Down The Byrds………,

01_ctonia2011_mida_web_sense-anyadaCtonia 2012, 100% Garnatxa Blanca

White wine of yellow colour with greenish hues. High complexity and aromatic intensity, with aromas of white fruit, chlorophyll and light toasted oak barrel, varietal and terrorir driven. The palate has a voluminous entry due to aging on its lees, light meatiness, surprising in a white wine. Very good persistence due to its remarkable acidity. A wine with personality and good spine. Love it!

masia-serra-emporda

Ctonia (meaning underground or pertaining to the earth) was an epithet used for the goddesses of the underworld (called chthonic) as Hecate, Melinoe or Nix. Also referred to as Demeter, guardian of the fields. The name Ctonia, comes from the fact that this wine is made from grapes from old vines and as such its roots are embedded deep in the ground. Harvested manually, collected in small containers.  The grapes are destemmed  and deposited in stainless steel vats for maceration (6-8 hours) at 10 degrees. Only the free run juice is extracted and fermentation begins at 14 degrees in a stainless steel vat.  When density of 1.020  is reached the liquid is transferred to chateau style barrels of French Allier oak to complete the fermentation process, aging 2 months in the same barrels giving a “batônnage” with the fine lees.

Vins-Masia-Serra1

Masia Serra produces wines from D.O. Empordà since 1996. The history of Masia Serra begins with a small vineyard planted in 1961 with the Grenache grape.  Other french varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, … occupy part of the 12 hectares that today make up the estate. Jaume Serra, owner and oenologist of the bodega, grew up in a traditional winemaking family.  After completion of his studies at the university Rovira i Virgili of Tarragona and completion of his arduous apprenticeship at Chateaux Petrus he decided to create his own wines at the bodega he founded in Cantallops. Jaume, grandson of a wine dealer and son of the also well known oenologist Simon Serra, has learned to value the noble liquid, which he says generates warm feelings in its surroundings. Masia Serra is a family owned bodega, the fruit of its efforts and its dreams.  The nobility and constancy of its work is evident in each footstep taken amongst its vines.

As you might have well noticed, this blog is all about and only covering wine from Catalonia. Wine, in all forms and shapes, is a considerable part of my life. However, I like to cover the regions in which I work and live. Back to the basics!

Catalan Wine 365 New1

Wine in Catalonia is ancient! The Ancient Greeks, Romans and the Carthusian monks, they have all been here, must be for a reason! It is a leading wine producing land, with exquisite reds, scrumptious rosés and whites which you can drink forever, as well as a multitude of sweet wines. Not to forget, this is where Cava was born!

San_Hugo_en_el_refectorio_de_los_cartujos

Huge and well know cellars like Freixenet, Codorniu, Raimat and Torres are at the forefront when it comes to Catalan wine, which are covered by 11 appellations (D.O:s) for wine and one exclusively for Cava. The vineyards have always been an irreplaceable part of the Catalan landscape, as well as its culture. Let’s keep it this way!

bg-historia05

The tradition of wine in Catalonia is deeply rooted, in some cases as deep as the vines. Nowadays representing a rising sector, gaining international prestige on a yearly basis. In Priorat, Penedès and Empordà, as well as the other D.O:s, you can find wine that can compete with any wine in the world.

sitges-and-freixenet

Cava is no longer the poor man’s and woman’s Champaign, but a quality product in its own right available all over the world. More than 200 million bottles of Cava attest to this fact, joined by 180 million for wine.

This DO includes the sub zones of South Priorat and some zones in Ribera d’Ebre. The soil has a high percentage of mineral salts, which is one of the main characteristics of this region. The cellars are young and modern, producing a small quantity of wine but of a great quality.

logo_do_penedesDO Penedès: This is probably the most famous wine region within Catalonia. It has powerful cellars, always improving their technology and innovating. It has traditionally been associated with white wines, but in the last years it has also started to produce top quality red wines, which have been internationally recognised.

DOPladeBages_Color

DO Pla de Bages: It is a small DO but that produces quality wines. In the last years, wine producers from this DO have put effort recuperating an autochthonous type of grape: the “picapoll”, which is very small and can be either red or white.
